Panionios drawn with Shirak or Gorica
Panionios will face off against Shirak or Gorica in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
Although the Greek Superleague playoffs ended just a few weeks ago, the new season is slowly coming upon us. At UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Panionios found out who will be their opponents in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. The Neo Smyrniotes will face the winner of Gorica (Slovenia) or Shirak (Armenia) from the first qualifying round, a draw that can be characterized as overall good on paper.
Panionios entered the draw as a seeded club do to their higher coefficient ranking compared to the other teams. The first leg will be played in Greece in less than a month's time on July 13th with the return leg set for July 20th on the road.
Gorica finished in second place of last year’s Slovenian PrvaLiga, thirteen points behind the champions Maribor, who have dominated the league in recent years. The four time league winners have enjoyed success in domestic play and are considered one of the best sides in Slovenian football.
Shirak claimed third place in last year’s Armenian Premier league finishing eleven points behind the leaders Alashkert. They did, however, win this year's Armenian Cup. They are considered the second most successful team in Armenia.
A reminder that Panionios finished fifth in this year’s Superleague and will be the first Greek team to kick off in Europe for the new season.
