Panionios’ European dream ended by Maccabi
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 3RD QUALIFYING ROUND (LEG 2)
|Panionios||0 - 1||Maccabi Tel-Aviv|
|(0 - 2)
Panionios’ European adventure ended abruptly on Thursday after a second 1-0 defeat in a row to Maccabi Tel-Aviv saw the Panthers exit at the third qualifying round stage.
An own goal from unfortunate Panionios captain Panagiotis Korbos following a 79th-minute corner proved the difference on the night at the Nea Smyrni stadium as Michalis Grigoriou’s men failed to overturn the deficit from the first leg last week.
The Panthers’ performance was far better than in Israel, with the likes of Iran midfielder Masoud Shojaei and Samed Yesil providing plenty of attacking threat.
Maccabi goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic also had to be on his guard, making several fine blocks.
For all their endeavor, however, Panionios could not quite match the quality of their opponents and all their hard work from last season - when at one stage it even seemed the modest Nea Smyrni club might steal the title from under Olympiacos’ noses – unfortunately has not got the reward of a place in the group stages.
