Panionios return to winning ways against Lamia
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 21
|Panionios||1 - 0||Lamia|
|Lazarou (P) 80'|
Panionios ended a four-game winless streak by edging a tightly-contest SuperLeague matchday 21 contest 1-0 against Lamia in Nea Smyrni, while Xanthi lost ground on the Panthers after stuttering to a 1-1 home draw with lowly Kerkyra.
For Panionios, who last picked up three points on Matchday 16, Lampros Lazarou scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes from full-time to seal a vital victory for Michali Grigoriou’s men.
The Greece Under-21 midfielder picked himself up after winning a penalty and made no mistake in slotting home the resulting spot-kick to spark jubilant celebrations among the home fans at the Nea Smyrni Stadium.
The three-point haul moved fifth-placed Panionios to within seven points of fourth-placed Atromitos, who host Olympiacos on Sunday, while the Panthers extended their lead ahead of Xanthi by two points.
|Xanthi||1 - 1||Kerkyra|
|Castro 90'+3'||Epstein 64'|
Xanthi were on top for much of the first-half in their clash with Kerkyra, but it was the struggling visitors who took a 64th-minute lead through Denis Epstein as the Corfu club produced a mcuh better second half display.
So much so that Xanthi were running out of ideas - and time - with Kerkyra set to seal a priceless win.
It was not to be though as there was an agonising end to the match for Kerkyra with substitute Matis Castro scoring a late, late equaliser for Xanthi in the third minute of added time to deny the visitors.
As a result, sixth-placed Xanthi are now two points behind Panionios, while Kerkyra remain in the relegation zone second from bottom.
