Panthers Secure Playoff Berth
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 28
|Panioinos||1 - 1||Platanias|
|Ben (p) 65'||Giakoumakis 10'|
Panionios secured a place in the SuperLeague playoffs on Sunday for the second season running after coming from behind to claim a 1-1 home draw against Platanias in a scrappy Matchday 28 encounter in Nea Smyrni.
Giorgos Giakoumakis gave the visitors a surprise early lead in the 10th minute with a first-time shot from close range for his 11th goal of the season, and it was a strike which came as a sucker punch to the home side.
But Vladan Milojevic’s team picked themselves up and got back into the match after half-time, with Ben Nabouhane levelling the match from the penalty spot five minutes after the hour mark.
Both sides had chances to claim the three points as fatigue set in in the latter stages of the second half, but typically of a match low on quality, neither side could find the cutting edge to get the vital breakthrough.
Just a couple of weeks ago Panionios were in with a shout of winning their first SuperLeague title, but a dip in form in recent matches saw that dream diminish. The Panthers, who stay in third place, though must still reflect on this campaign with pride and look forward to aiming for a Champions League place by triumphing in the playoffs.
