Panthers Stay in Title Hunt
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 26
|Panionios||2 - 1||Atromitos|
Panionios remain on heels of SuperLeague leaders Olympiacos after grinding out another vittal 2-1 home win over Atromitos on Sunday which saw them cut the gap back to six points on the Erythrolefki.
Vladan Milojevic’s side made at lively start at the Nea Smyrni Stadium with German forward Samed Yesil rattling the woodwork early on before striker Giorgos Masouras broke the deadlock in the 26th minute.
The hosts were cruising just after half-time when El Fardou Ben Nabouhane, on loan from Olympiacos, added to his impressive goal tally with another timely strike in the 52nd minute - his ninth of the season.
However, instead of shutting up shop and killing off the game, Panionios relaxed and allowed Atromitos a route back into the game when French forward Nicolas Diguiny pulled a goal back six minutes after the hour mark.
The Panthers held firm though for a win which keeps their title dream alive with four matches still to play in what promises to be an exciting end to the season for the Nea Smyrni club and neutrals. Atromitos, in contrast, remain stranded in mid-table as their season looks set to end on a low key note.
