PAOK Closing in on First Place, Still Hope for AEK
After four matchdays, PAOK are the clear favorites to claim first place in the Superleague playoffs.
After yesterday’s results, PAOK now sit on top of the playoff table with 8 points, two points ahead of second placed AEK. However, PAOK are expected to be awarded three more points from the abandoned matchday 2 fixture away to Panathinaikos.
If the Dikefalos tou Vora is eventually awarded the three points, they will only need a single point in the upcoming derby against AEK to mathematically secure first place and a ticket to next year’s Champions League Qualifying. In the case that the Thessalonikis are defeated at the OAKA against AEK, they will need a victory over Panathinaikos at Toumba in the final fixture in order to secure top spot, regardless of AEK’s result against Panionios.
AEK still have a slim chance of climbing to the top of the playoff table. In order for that to happen, the Enosis need victories over PAOK and Panionios in the remaining fixtures, in combination with a PAOK defeat or a draw to Panathinaikos in Toumba on the final matchday.
As for Panathinaikos, their match against Panionios is critical if they want to avoid last place in the playoffs which leads to a spot in next year’s Europa League second qualifying round (rather than third round), meaning their season would start in mid-July. Although the Pasini are currently ahead of Panionios by 1 point, any extra points will do if the court decides to deduct points from Panathinaikos due to what happened in Leoforos against PAOK.
