Phil Goss and Linos Chrysikopoulos each scored 18 points to lead PAOK to an emphatic 86-65 win over AEK in the most recent installment of the Dikefale Derby in the Greek Basket League on Saturday night.
Vassilis Kavvadas led all AEK scorers with 16 points, but the Greek Cup finalists were unable to find the form that allowed the side to mark a big win in Europe on Tuesday.
After a humbling defeat in the FIBA Basketball Champions League midweek, PAOK rebounded in a big way to take derby honours and extend their league winning-streak to six games.
Saturday’s loss marked the second time AEK have lost a derby clash in Thessaloniki this season after previously losing to Aris earlier in the season. AEK also lost their first game since Dragan Sakota took over coaching duties – the Serbian bench-boss starting his third tenure as AEK coach with impressive wins over Olympiacos in the league and Movistar Estudiantes in the FIBA Champions League.
PAOK took initiative as early as the first quarter as the home side held a 29-19 lead by the end of the first quarter.
A bit of a fightback from AEK in the second quarter would see the PAOK lead sliced by one point, but still PAOK were comfortably in front at 45-36 by halftime.
PAOK would pad their lead early and often in the second half, and a +8 run in the third quarter seemingly confirmed victory for the Thessaloniki outfit as Ilias Papatheodorou’s men cruised to the finish line.
Both sides turn their action but to continental duties in the FIBA Champions League midweek with PAOK travelling across the Aegean to face Turkish side Gaziantep, while AEK return home to take on Venezia.
