PAOK made home advantage count on Tuesday night as the Dikefalos tou Vorra defeated Karsiyaka 74-68 at the PAOK Sports Arena in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.
Darnell Jackson and Phil Goss each scored 13 points to lead PAOK scorers on a night the Thessaloniki outfit will feel they should have won by more despite their six-point advantage at the final buzzer.
In fact, PAOK’s stern defensive effort in the third quarter stretched the home side’s lead to 11 points after three quarters, before that lead stretched to 19 points in the fourth quarter.
PAOK’s loss of focus in the latter part of the final frame would come costly as Karsiyaka surged back to cut the deficit to just six points heading into next week’s replay in Turkey.
David Kennedy was Karsiyaka’s protagonist in attack as he notched 16 points for the Turkish side, who will be keen on progress after a strong fourth quarter in Thessaloniki.
