The match happened to be PAOK’s first home game of their European season, and they got off to a good start, taking the first set 25-17. The second set was extremely close, and required PAOK to save set point. PAOK would eventually claim the set 30-28 to take a 2-0 lead, and seemed to be heading for their first Champions League win of the season.
However, the Germans would strike back in the third set. At one point, the visitors had an 11-15 lead. They would quickly extend their lead, before eventually taking the third set 14-25. In the fourth set, the Germans held a narrow 6-8 lead early on. Just like in the previous set, the visitors would extend their lead, this time to 9-16, and eventually they would take the set 17-25.
In the decisive fifth set, PAOK got off to a really strong start, taking a 3-0 lead early on. PAOK would hold a narrow 8-7 lead later on in the set, before the visiting Germans took control and went up 9-12. They then ended the match by winning three consecutive points, taking the set 9-15, and thus taking the match 2-3.
Although PAOK (0-3) are still seeking their first win in the Champions League, it must be said that they did well enough to come so close against the undefeated group leaders in VfB Friedrichshafen. PAOK will hope to avenge this loss in their next Champions League fixture on January 31, as they will travel to Germany for a rematch against VfB Friedrichshafen.
