Goals from Greece midfielder Dimitris Pelkas and Ukrainian international midfielder Yevhen Shakhov saw Razvan Lucescu’s men deservedly home against Damir Canadi’s Atromitos on a night when when the winning margin could have been much bigger for the home side.
Although PAOK opened the scoring in controversial circumstances after 19 minutes when Pelkas netted from an offside position from a clever Shakhov backheel, the hosts dominated proceedings throughout on the night.
Despite an early, ninth-minute chance from Atromitos’ French forward Nicolas Diguiny, whose shot was cleared off the line by PAOK defender Leo Matos, it was all PAOK.
Luscecu’s players were in impressive form again, just as they have been in the league, but contrived to miss a hatful of chances before Shakhov finally headed in a superb goal five minutes from full-time from Omar El Kaddouri’s excellent cross.
The result means PAOK are firm favorites to book a place in the last four of the competition when the two teams meet again in Pertisteri on February 7.
