Despite winning the 2018 title of Greek champions, AEK Athens are only the second favourites for next season, trailing PAOK while boasting a narrow lead over Olympiacos. Nevertheless, taking into account what happened in this year’s Super League, it’s not too hard to figure out why PAOK are odds on to win the 2018/2019 edition. The Dikefalos tou Vorra looked set to end their long title drought, but when the club got involved in controversial scandals in home matches against Olympiacos and AEK, all hope of taking the crown was lost. Still, PAOK then defeated AEK 2:0 in the Greek Cup final in early May.

Both Winmasters and Stoiximan.gr have PAOK, AEK and Olympiacos down as the overwhelming three favourites to become the best team in Greece next year. Unsurprisingly, Panathinaikos and Atromitos Athens are the top three’s nearest challengers:

TITLE FAVOURITES

PAOK

Rumoured to be close to signing Croatian full-back Darijo Srna and gritty Swedish defensive midfielder Pontus Wernbloom, PAOK will be even stronger next season, especially if prolific hitman Aleksandar Prijovic stays put in Thessaloniki. PAOK feel extremely hard done by after coming second in the 2017/2018 campaign, so they have added motivation to grab the title.

Winmasters -  2.00. Stoiximan.gr - 2.10.

AEK

The Kitrinomavri have lost the influential Jakob Johansson, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Sergio Araujo and manager Manolo Jimenez, meaning they are only considered the second favourites. However, new head coach Marinos Ouzounidis still has a talented roster at his disposal, as AEK managed to keep Marko Livaja and are close to securing new deals with Vasilis Barkas, Ognjen Vranjes and Andre Simoes. Forward Christos Almpanis joined AEK from Apollon Smyrnis on Wednesday.

Winmasters -  3.75. Stoiximan.gr - 3.65.

Olympiacos

Switching coaches with alarming regularity, 44-time Greek champions Olympiacos endured a dreadful campaign, failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after finishing in third place of the table. Unfortunately for Thrylos fans, the bookmakers aren’t convinced and don’t think that Olympiacos are capable of taking back the Super League trophy to Piraeus. Incoming boss Pedro Martins certainly has a large task on his hands.

Winmasters - 3.75. Stoiximan.gr - 3.75.

CHASING PACK

Panathinaikos

The struggling Athenian giants do have financial salvation in the shape of Thai businessman Pairoj Piempongsant, but owing plenty of large debts and failing to obtain a Super League licence in time, Panathinaikos will probably start the next campaign with a six-point deduction and a strict ban on transfers. It may take a few years for Panathinaikos to re-group and challenge for Super League glory once again.

Winmasters - 26.00. Stoiximan.gr - 25.00.

Atromitos Athens

Under intelligent manager Damir Canadi, the Peristeri outfit were the 2017/2018 season’s surprise team, punching above their weight to eventually finish in fourth position of the Super League standings. Atromitos are expected to be making life difficult for the so-called bigger clubs again, but the loss of skillful playmaker Amr Warda leaves a huge hole in Canadi’s squad.

Winmasters - 101.00. Stoiximan.gr - 125.00.

BEST OF THE REST

Asteras Tripolis

The Tripoli club struggled early on, but they gradually improved as the season continued, eventually overtaking Xanthi to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. Asteras do have a modest budget and squad, however they will surely be hanging around mid-table and giving the leaders a run for their money at home.

Winmasters - 176.000. Stoiximan.gr - 175.00.

Panionios

To be honest, it was a thoroughly disappointing year for Panionios. In the 2016/2017 campaign, they were only a few points off top spot at one point and making Olympiacos sweat, but this time injuries took their toll and and the Panthers missed out on European football. An improvement is required.

Winmasters -  201.00. Stoiximan.gr - 175.00.
