Papastathopoulos’ availability more hopeful than Torosidis
Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Vasilis Torosidis continued training on their own on Tuesday as both are hoping to recover in time for Thursday's first leg playoff against Croatia.
In addition to the absences of the injured Donis, Mantalos, and the suspended Manolas, Michael Skibbe has two additional injury headaches with Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Vasilis Torosidis. The two defenders are in a race against time to recover from their injuries before Thursday’s first leg playoff qualifier against Croatia in Zagreb.
Greece’s medical team remain optimistic that the Borussia Dortmund man will be ready in time for Thursday’s fixture, although he underwent an individual training program on Tuesday and did not train with the rest of the team. A reminder, Sokratis suffered an injury over the weekend with Borussia Dormund in their derby fixture against Bayern Munich.
Torosidis also trained by himself on Tuesday and although Sokratis has a greater possibility to play in Zagreb, Torosidis’ availability remains a 50/50 game-time decision.
Like Sokratis and Torosidis, Panathinaikos’ Dimitris Kourbelis, who suffered a knock over the weekend against Asteras Tripolis, underwent an individual training program on Tuesday, but he is expected to be ready in time for Thursday’s match.
The Greek team departs for Croatia tomorrow at 11:00 AM and will undergo one training session at the Maksimir stadium. The hope is that both players will be able to train with the rest of the team on Wednesday, officially ruling them ready for Thursday’s first leg playoff.
