PAS humble Panionios to boost survival chances
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 19
|Panionios||0 - 1||PAS Giannina|
PAS Giannina gave their SuperLeague survival hopes a much-needed shot in the arm on Sunday courtesy of a narrow 1-0 home win over Panionios in a tense matchday 19 clash at the Zosimades stadium, while Xanthi capitalised on the Panthers’ loss to gain vital ground on the Nea Smyrni side by beating Levadiakos 2-1.
PAS’ New Zealand international defender Themistoklis Tzimopoulos scored the only goal of the game in the first minute of added time to settle a match which had previously seemed destined to end in a 0-0 draw.
Both sides had chances to score earlier in the match, with Lampros Lamprou hitting the woodwork for Panionios and Evripidis Giakos also doing the same for the hosts in a lively first half.
But the tempo dropped in the second half and it seemed that both sides had resigned themselves to earning a draw before Tzimopoulos’ late strike saw PAS pick up three vital points which lifted them eight points clear of the relegation zone and up into ninth place.

Up north in Xanthi, the home fans had plenty to cheer as goals from Spanish midfielder Pablo de Lucas and Greek forward Vasilis Fasidis helped the home side overturn a one-goal deficit and claim all three points against Levadiakos.
The visitors had gone ahead in the first half through Comoros midfielder Mohamed Youssouf, but could not hold the home side back as they responded with a powerful second-half display.
The win enabled Xanthi to leapfrog Panionios into fifth place on goal difference, with both sides having collected 27 points so far.
