Olympiacos are in search of a new coach yet again, after the Piraeus giants and Oscar Garcia parted ways on Tuesday. The Spaniard departed the club after coaching the Erythrolefki to another disappointing result in league play, a 1:1 away draw to Levadiakos, a result that left the defending SuperLeague champions in third place in the league standings.
According to reports in Greece and Portugal, Pedro Martins is the clear favorite to take over Olympiacos’ head coaching position for the new season. Martins has been linked with a move to Olympiacos in the past (last summer and this winter), but difficulties with his former club, Guimaraes, prevented his move to Piraeus. The 47-year old is a personal choice of club president Vaggelis Marinakis and quick, necessary actions have been taken to close a deal with the 47-year old.
The two sides are in advanced talks and a deal could be reached in the coming days or even hours. According to reports, Martins will likely sign a two-year contract (1+1 years) and will take over the club at the end of the season. Interim Manager Christos Kontis will coach the team through the end of the season.
Martins has coached since 2006, managing clubs in his home country including União Lamas (2006-07), Lusitânia (2007-09), Espinho (2009-10), Maritimo B (2010), Maritimo (2010-14), Rio Ave (2014-16), and Vitória Guimarães (2016-18).
