Olympiacos’ number one target for the head coach position, Mauricio Pellegrino, kindly denied the club’s offer on Tuesday. Despite a very inviting offer from the Greek Champions, Pellegrino will continue his career elsewhere with Crystal Palace looking to be the favorite to acquire the Argentine coach.
Olympiacos are now forced to turn to alternative options and details concerning the head coach position are likely to be released on Wednesday or Thursday. As of now, the Erythrolefki will continue shoping in the Iberian Peninsula market with Pedro Martins rumored to be the new number one target for the managerial position.
The current Guimaraes coach is not opposed to a move to Greece, but has also attracted the attention of FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon. To make matters more difficult, Martins has another year on his contract with Guimaraes. Martins led Guimaraes to a record breaking 4th place finish in this season’s Portuguese Primeira Liga and also a run to the Portuguese Cup final where they lost to Benfica 2-1.
Former Xanthi boss Răzvan Lucescu seems to be Olympiacos’ second option for the position and a deal with the Romanian boss can be sealed immediately as he waits on standby.
Olympiacos’’ third option looks to be former Anderlecht manager Besnik Hasi. The 45-year old has experience coaching a reasonably big European club and has experience in European competitions including the Champions League and Europa League.
Finally, as time ticks and Olympiacos remain without a new manager the option of current boss Takis Lemonis looks to be all the more favorable.
