The Cretan side bid farewell to the Greek SuperLeague as their five year stay in the top flight officially came to an end on Wednesday. Due to Apollon Smyrnis’ 0:1 win over PAS Giannina in the rescheduled matchday 25 encounter, Platanias were mathematically relegated to the Football League.
Platanias have had a disappointing season in the SuperLeague sitting with only 10 points from 26 matches and their demotion to the second division became inevitable as the year went on. Apollon’s win on Wednesday was the final nail in Platanias’ coffin as the Elafra Taxiarchia moved up to 25 points, tied with Lamia in 13th place, meaning Platanias cannot make up the 15-point difference in the remaining four matches. One other SuperLeague side will join Platanias in next year’s Football League with Kerkyra, Apollon Smyrnis, Lamia, and Larissa set to fight for their survival in the final remaining matches.
The team based outside of Chania came close to qualifying for Europe last season, but have seen things turn for the worse in their 2017/18 campaign. They will now focus on next year’s Greek Football League with hopes of a speedy return to top flight football.
