Retsos’ Bright Future...Compared to Manolas and Sokratis
Panagiotis Retsos is one of many young prospects in Greek Football with a bright future and he is already “ahead” of Greece’s two best defenders, Kostas Manolas and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, when comparing the players’ careers at the age of 18.
Panagiotis Retsos was quickly integrated into the Olympiacos first team this season, finding playing time in the Greek Super League and Greek Cup, but also in big matches for the UEFA Europa League. Earlier this season, in a cup match against Atromitos, Retsos wore the captain's armband for Olympiacos, becoming the youngest player to do so in club history. Retsos has proven that he can play at a high level, despite his young age of only 18 years old.
Greece currently house two of Europe's best defenders including Kostas Manolas of Roma and Sokratis Papastathopoulos of Borussia Dortmund. An interesting statistic shows that Retsos could have a very bright career ahead when comparing Retsos to the two defenders when they were 18 years old.
At 18, Kostas Manolas was playing for Thrasyvoulos in the Greek Superleague while Sokratis Papastathopoulos played at Niki Volou in the Greek second division. The two defenders worked their way up to Greece’s big teams (AEK and Olympiacos) before making the jump to Europe for Roma and Genoa (then Milan), respectively.
Retsos, who currently plays for giants Olympiacos, has already gained valuable experience playing at a high level and can be considered “ahead” of the two world class players when comparing their careers at the age of 18. The Olympiacos man will look to continue his bright career with hopes of becoming one of Europe's top defenders, like Manolas and Papastathopoulos, in the years to come.
The 18-year old's talents have not gone unnoticed having attracted the interest of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Monchengladbach. Additionally, representative from Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Young Boys, Marseille, Manchester United, Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Southamptom, Hoffenheim, Basel, and Besiktas have scouted out the youngster.
