The Greens were the last club in Europe to overturn such a deficit after falling behind 5-2 in the first leg of the 1987-88 UEFA Cup to Hungarian side Honved in the Third Round. 31 years ago Panathinaikos lost the first leg in Hungary by the same scoreline Roma did in England during the week. However, they were able to turn it around in the return leg at OAKA, winning 5-1, to progress 7-6 on aggregate.
Dimitris Saravakos salvaged some hope in the first leg by scoring twice but only after Honved was leading 5-0, identical to Roma’s clash with Liverpool. In the second leg, Vangelis Vlachos struck twice in the first half, but even then Panathinaikos was still up against it. Kostas Antoniou scored 10 minutes into the second half but Honved grabbed an away goal 5 minutes later. Kostas Mavridis gave the Greens a flicker of hope with a 65th minute header. The all important goal came in the 82nd minute via Kostas Batsilinas’ open net tap in. Wild scenes ensued at OAKA and another chapter was written in Panathinaikos’ glorious European history.
Below are the videos of the highlights of both legs.
