Ruthless Apollon thrash APOEL in Nicosia
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION - MATCHDAY 9
|ΑPOEL||0 - 4||Apollon Limassol|
Apollon Limassol made a huge statement of intent in the Cypriot First Division, destroying reigning champions APOEL Nicosia 4:0 at the GSP Stadium.
APOEL came into this match as the league leaders, but the capital club were taken apart in a scintillating display by a fired up Apollon side.
The deadlock was broken within four minutes of the match beginning. Emilio Zelaya broke free in the APOEL penalty area, blasting a fierce effort beyond the outstretched grasp of home goalkeeper Nauzet Perez. Incredibly, just a few moments later, Apollon doubled their advantage in Nicosia. Passive APOEL defending allowed Croatian forward Antonio Jakolis to take aim, who thumped a powerful attempt into the far left corner.
A rampant Apollon showed no signs of stopping. On the 14th minute mark, a killer counterattack ended with captain Fotis Papoulis sliding into the unguarded net at point blank range, in turn practically ending the match as a contest.
Not in the mood for showing any mercy to their opponents, Apollon grabbed a fourth early in the second half. Clever interchange play saw Anton Maglica clip the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 4:0, a score which few could imagine before this game began. Apollon calmly saw the match out, claiming a hugely important win against APOEL.
As a result, Apollon now lead the table with 49 points, one ahead of APOEL Nicosia. In 21 matches this season, the Limassol outfit are yet to lose.
