Sakota back in AEK hot seat

Following the departure of Sotiris Manolopoulos, AEK have turned to a familiar face to take over coaching duties at the club…

One day after announcing that Sotiris Manolopoulos had been relieved of his duties at the club, AEK revealed the Greek manager’s replacement by announcing that Dragan Sakota would be the club’s new coach for the foreseeable future.

A rough stretch of results which saw AEK lose to Lavrio in the Greek Basket League last weekend before being defeated by German side Bayreuth in the FIBA Basketball Champions League has seen the club fall into turbulent times.

The decision to move on from Manolopoulos came as a shock to some considering AEK’s upset over Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup to reach February’s Final, but the club’s decision as a successor was far from a surprise considering Sakota’s close ties with the club.

Sakota, who prior to the announcement was serving as the club’s Academies Director, returned to the club in 2014 – 11 years after ending his first stint as coach for the Enosi.

After two years on the AEK touchline, Sakota was promoted to General Manager of the club in 2016 before transitioning to Academies Director shortly thereafter.

Sakota’s ties to AEK run deep with his son, Dusan, currently the team’s captain and a key roleplayer within the roster.

Sakota’s first game in charge will be a stiff test as AEK host one of Sakota’s former employers when Olympiacos visit OAKA on Sunday.
