AGONAsport’s George Tsitsonis brings you a full preview for matchday 10 of the Greek SuperLeague.
The Dikefalo derby between AEK and PAOK will be the standout fixture of Matchday 10 of the Greek Super League. It will be second versus third in the league when the two sides meet at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Sunday evening. Depending on how Atromitos fare, a victory could put AEK or PAOK atop the Super League standings.
Leaders Atromitos meanwhile will face a tough test at home to Panionios. While Atromitos have impressed in the first third of the season the jury is still out as to whether they have the squad to sustain a title challenge. A win against Panionios could provide further proof that Damir Canadi’s team have what it takes.
Olympiacos look to rebound from derby disappointment last weekend against Panathinaikos when they host Platanias in Sunday’s early match. Takis Lemonis’ team produced a fine performance in a midweek 0-0 draw with Barcelona in the Champions’ League. Platanias will play their first match without Giorgos Paraschos. The veteran manager leaving the club last week after three seasons due to the team’s poor start to the season.
Atromitos-Panionios is on Saturday along with two other matches. Panetolikos host Xanthi in a midtable clash in Agrinio to open up the weekend slate of fixtures. The late match that day features struggling Asteras Tripolis hosting Panathinaikos. Asteras are tied for last in the league, while financially embattled Panathinaikos have won four of their last six after an indifferent start.
On Sunday, Larisa look to make it three wins on the bounce when they go to Kerkyra. The island club looking to bounce back after a tough away defeat to PAS Giannina last week. PAS Giannina take the trip to Apollon Smyrnis on Sunday as well.
Rounding out the weekend games is the clash between Levadiakos and Lamia on Monday night. Levadiakos suffered their first defeat of the season last week against Larisa. A goal by their opponents five minutes into injury-time led to a 1-0 defeat so only a win will do in order to recover this week against Lamia. Lamia are looking up for the fight of staying up. The club won 2-0 against Platanias last week boosting them up to 9th in the table.
