PAOK kept their slender lead over AEK in the Greek Super League while Kerkyra took a big step toward safety in Matchday 22 action of the 2017/18 Greek Super League.

Lamia may have troubled PAOK for a half, but the league leaders remained atop the Super League table with second half goals from Dimitris Pelkas and Mauricio in a 2-0 win on Saturday.

AEK used a surprising hat-trick from Ognjen Vranjes and a goal from Tasos Bakasetas to comfortably defeat Xanthi 4-0 on Sunday at home.

The AGONAsport Match of the Week was a relegation battle between Kerkyra and Apollon Smirnis which Kerkyra came out on top of 2-0 in Saturday’s early kick-off. A brilliant Martin Rolle free-kick led to the opening goal for Kerkyra while Denis Espstein added the insurance of a second goal with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, Olympiacos got back to winning ways with a 1-0 home victory over Panionios. Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe scoring the winner for the Erythrolefki with a 48th minute strike after an assist from Panagiotis Tachtsidis.

Atromitos left it late, but came away with a 1-0 win on the road against Asteras Tripolis. Dimitris Chatziisaias’ near-post flick in injury-time giving the Peristeri club the points in an all-action affair.

Panetolikos continued their recent resurgence under new boss Traianos Dellas with a hard-fought 2-1 away win at Levadiakos. Vlad Morar converted two penalty kicks in the 37th and 59th minutes respectively to seal the win for Panetolikos. In between, Levadiakos had pulled level through Marko Markovski’s 39th minute goal. The hosts had goalkeeper Devis Epassy sent off for a second yellow card in the 58th minute.

It took until Matchday 22, but Panathinaikos finally picked up their first away of the season. The Prasini defeated Larisa 1-0 thanks to Robin Lod’s goal in the 19th minute in this week’s Monday night match-up.

Platanias were rocked by a Pedro Conde brace in the second half as they went down to a 3-0 home defeat to PAS Giannina. Conde’s two goals were followed by a late strike from Theodoros Berios as Platanias inch closer to relegation.

Matchday MVP - Ognjen Vranjes (AEK)

It has to be Ognjen Vranjes. The Bosnian center-back scored a hat-trick in 28 minutes in the first half to power AEK past Xanthi. Two headers and a fortuitous opening strike gave Vranjes the unlikely hat-trick as Xanthi had no answer for his predatory movements in the box.

Goal of the Matchday - Dimitris Pelkas (PAOK)

A fantastic team goal finished off by Pelkas. Robert Mak’s good work on the right saw his cross land at the feet of Mauricio. He rolled a short pass to Diego Biseswar whose first-time cross was met by Pelkas for a short-range header to give PAOK the lead in the 56th minute.

Save of the Matchday - Nikos Papadopoulos (Lamia)

A truly stupendous save by Papadopoulos. The Lamia goalkeeper used an instinctive kick-save to send Jose Angel Crespo’s close-range header somehow over the bar.

Play of the Matchday - Martin Rolle (Kerkyra)

Surely this would have been the goal of the day if the league hadn’t deemed it an own goal. Rolle’s astonishing free-kick from about 30 yards curled in and hit the underside of the bar before hitting Ivan Covic in the back and bouncing over the line. It was a wonderful free-kick from the talented Argentinian and without a doubt one of the best free-kicks in the Super League this season.

Team Performance of the Matchday - Kerkyra

Kerkyra saved their best performance of the season for their most important match. Apollon may have had some early chances, but Kerkyra persisted and picked up a vital win that could be the difference this season between relegation and safety. Rolle was brilliant with his free-kick and assist to Denis Epstein, who once again showed he is the man for the big moments for Kerkyra.

Surprise of the Matchday - Panetolikos

It was a week bereft of shocks, but Panetolikos continue to surprise with their superb form. The positive impact of Traianos Dellas’ appointment has been visible in the team’s play and their results. In a tough match away to Levadiakos that included 10 yellow cards and a red, Panetolikos held their nerve again and picked up three more points.

Disappointment of the Matchday - Xanthi

AEK are in top form at the moment, but that still cannot explain Xanthi’s performance at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. A first-half capitulation by the visitors saw the match done and dusted by halftime as AEK were 4-0 up. One certainly expects more from a team that lies 6th in the Super League standings.
