The 2017/18 Greek Super League season came to a close over the weekend with the completion of the final round of matches. Matchday 30 threw up some surprise results, featured a title celebration, and saw the remaining spot for Europe decided.
AEK used a Sergio Araujo goal to finish off their title-winning campaign with a 1-0 away win over Apollon Smirnis. There were jubilant scenes at the end of the match as the players and club officials celebrated the club’s first title in 24 years with the fans in attendance. Apollon were also in celebratory mood, despite the loss, as they look forward to another season in the top division.
PAOK used a Dimitris Pelkas goal and a brace from Aleksandar Prijovic to see off Platanias 3-0 at home. It was a comfortable evening for the Thessaloniki club as Prijovic’s two goals saw him finish the season as the leading scorer in the Super League.
Olympiacos ended a disastrous campaign with a 3-0 loss to PAS Giannina away. It was an embarrassing defeat for the Erythrolefki who must engage in some serious rebuilding if they are to challenge for the title next season. PAS received goals from Themis Tzimopoulos, Pedro Conde, and Higor Vidal en route to the big win which sees them finish in eighth place.
Atromitos finished their fine campaign in style with a 4-0 victory over relegated Kerkyra. The Peristeri club were led by a brace from Abiola Dauda within the first 15 minutes as well as additional strikes in the second half from Kostas Kotsopoulos and Nicolas Diguiny.
The big news of the day came from Agrinio as Asteras Tripolis defeated Panetolikos 2-0. The win clinched fifth place for Asteras meaning the team will be playing in Europe next season. Walter Iglesias opened the scoring after 24 minutes for Savvas Pantelidis’ team and Michalis Manias made sure of the win with a goal twelve minutes from the end.
Elsewhere, Panathinaikos and Xanthi finished their abandoned match on Monday at the Leoforos Stadium with the visitors winning 2-1. Panionios ended their season on a high with a 2-0 over Levadiakos. Larisa and Lamia both scored in the final ten minutes in a 1-1 draw.
Matchday MVP - Aleksandar Prijovic (PAOK)
The Serbian striker was at his deadly best for PAOK against Platanias on Saturday, scoring a brace en route to a 3-0 win. The two goals brought his tally to 19 on the season, good enough to finish as the Super League’s high scorer for the 2017/18 season.
Goal of the Matchday - Pedro Conde (PAS Giannina)
What a brilliant strike by the Spanish attacker. Conde produced a terrific volley to score against Olympiacos after bringing the ball down on his chest 12 yards out from a cross by Alexandros Nikolias.
Save of the Matchday - Filip Klajic (Platanias)
The Platanias goalkeeper may have shipped three against PAOK, but he was responsible for a number of good saves to keep the scoreline down. His full diving stop from a Vieirinha free-kick with a few minutes left was the true highlight of a good performance.
Play of the Matchday - AEK
The Super League champions scored a goal that showcased their teamwork. From well within their own half, AEK constructed a fine attack with quick passes through the midfield. The ball ended up on the foot of Marko Livaja who crossed for his strike partner Sergio Araujo. The Argentine striker chested down and hit a left-footed shot to give AEK a fine goal.
Team Performance of the Matchday/Surprise of the Matchday - PAS Giannina
Olympiacos have been a shadow of their former selves, but take nothing away from PAS Giannina. The home side were brilliant in putting Olympiacos to the sword. The victory was useful in pushing PAS Giannina to the top ten in the league. The performance however is what truly remains, and a big scoreline against the strongest team of the last 20 years.
Disappointment of the Matchday - Olympiacos
Even though interim manager Christos Kontis tried out some new faces, the 3-0 defeat to PAS Giannina cannot be excused on any level for the Piraeus side. Certainly, the former champions have their work cut out for them ahead of next season.
