Slovakia Comeback to Defeat Greece
FIVB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - QUALIFYING
|Greece||2 - 3||Slovakia|
Despite going ahead 2-0 set, Greece were defeated 3-2 set by Slovakia in matchday 4 of FIVB World Championship qualifying and will need a miracle to finish second in the group which leads to the next round of qualifying.
Greece were cruising to a big win over Slovakia in their fourth qualifier for the FIVB World Championships taking the first two sets in the match 25-22 and 25-20.
Greece managed to gain an early lead in the third set but the Slovaks came back to win the set 25-21, bringing the match at 2-1. The momentum was on Slovakia’s side and they took an early lead in the fourth set going on to win 25-19, tying the match at 2-2.
In the tiebreaker set, Greece went ahead 3-0 and maintained a slight advantage at 9-8. As the match wore on, the players of the Galanolefki seemed fatigue and it was Slovakia who completed the impressive comeback to win the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
The result leaves Greece well behind in the fight for second place, which leads to a spot in the next qualifying round. In the final matchday of qualifying, Greece will need to defeat Luxembourg 3-0 or 3-1 set and hope that both Austria and Slovakia lose to Holland and Moldova, respectively, with the same scoreline. Although Slovakia will have a tough test against the group winner Netherlands, foreseeing an Austrian loss to Moldova seems to be extremely unlikely.
Despite Greece winning their opening too matches in qualifying against Moldova and Austria, the Ethniki will need a miracle to advance to the next round after two losses to Holland and Slovakia.
