Sokratis scores against APOEL, No celebration out of respect
Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored for Borussia Dortmund against APOEL in Tuesday’s Champions League action, but did not celebrate out of respect to the Cypriot Champions.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos salvaged a point for Borussia Dortmund in what was a difficult fixture for the German giants in Nicosia against Cypriot champions APOEL. After APOEL shockingly took the lead in the 62nd minute, Sokratis Papastathopoulos responded for the visitors five minutes later with a well placed header from Mario Gotze’s cross to bring Dortmund level.
Despite the important goal, Papastathopoulos did not celebrate out of respect to the Cypriot champions and the Greek nation, a true testament to his character. APOEL and Borussia Dortmund played to a 1-1 draw, a result that leaves both teams tied with one point at the bottom of Group H as Real Madrid and Tottenham sit first with seven points each.
After the match, Sokratis stated “APOEL have a very good team. It is very likely that many underestimated APOEL, however we see that at this level all the teams are very good. Congratulations to APOEL and their players. A very good performance.”
When asked why he did not celebrate his goal, the Greece international stated “I did not celebrate the goal only and only out of respect.”
