A 25-point night for Vassilis Spanoulis led the way as Olympiacos topped Valencia 80-70 at the Peace & Friendship Stadium in the EuroLeague on Thursday.
Spanoulis also added 9 assists as the Greek international nearly notched a double-double on a night where he was the difference for the Piraeus giants, as Valencia put in a resilient effort.
Fernando San Emeterio led Valencia with 19 points as the Spanish side gave a good account of themselves despite falling behind early in Piraeus.
Olympiacos had surged out to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter, but that advantage was cut to just a point (40-39) by halftime as Valencia went on a 28-18 run in the second frame.
The Erythrolefki padded their lead in the third quarter, with Kostas Papanikolaou playing a key part at both ends of the court – as demonstrated by his 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Olympiacos held firm in the final frame to keep their lead intact before padding their advantage to ultimately hold on a for a double-digit win to improve to 16-7 on the season.
Valencia slipped to 8-15 on the season with the loss, with the Spanish side well-behind the chasing pack for the final play-off spot.
Olympiacos will put their three-game winning streak on the line next week when they clash with arch-rivals Panathinaikos at OAKA in hopes of increasing their grip on home court advantage in the play-offs. Meanwhile, Valencia will look to return to the win column when they host Brose Bamberg.
