Stefanidi Nominated for World Athlete of the Year
Greek pole vaulter Ekaterini Stefanidi was announced as one of the finalists for the 2017 IAAF World Athlete of the Year award.
Stefanidi, who was already named European Athlete of the Year, was announced as a finalist in the women’s category along with Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam and Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana. The winner will be announced on November 24 in Monaco, at the 2017 IAAF Athletics Awards.
There was a three-way voting process to determine the finalists. Both the IAAF Council and the IAAF Family cast their votes via email. Fans were able to vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms. The IAAF Council’s vote counted for 50%, the IAAF Family’s votes counted for 25%, and the social media vote counted for 25% as well. Voting ended on October 16.
