Superleague Playoff Schedule Announced, PAOK/AEK in the Opener
The Greek Superleague playoff schedule was announced after Monday’s draw with PAOK and AEK set to kick things off on Sunday.
After the Greek Superleague standings were validated in Monday’s Superleague Board of Directors meeting, the draw took place for this year’s playoffs. As fate would have it, the playoffs will begin with a repeat of the Greek Cup Final between PAOK and AEK with the Dikefalos tou Vora hosting the Kitronomavri in Thessaloniki. The other matchup will see Panionios host Panathinaikos in Nea Smyrni.
The first matchday of the playoffs will take place this Sunday, May 14th and the playoffs will conclude on May 31st when PAOK host Panathinaikos and Panionios host AEK.
PAOK will begin the playoffs with two points while Panathinaikos begin with one point. Both Panionios and AEK will begin with zero points.
After the incidents that took place during Saturday's Greek Cup Final, it waits to be seen what penalties await both PAOK and AEK. AEK could play all three playoff home games in a closed stadium while PAOK could play two of their three homes games in an empty Toumba. That is because it takes 5 calendar days to make a decision on what penalties will be enforced, meaning that PAOK will surely host AEK with fans on Sunday. The possibility of a point deduction, whether enforced in this year's or next year’s standings, still remains at large for both teams.
