AEK booked a ticket to the 2018 Greek Cup final in dramatic fashion after Lazaros Christodoulopoulos netted a late wonder goal to send his side through on away goals at the expense of Larissa. The Kitrinomavri will match up against PAOK in a repeat of last year’s final, meaning that the SuperLeague’s 5th place team will enter next year's UEFA Europa League.
Next season, the Greek SuperLeague champion will enter the UEFA Champions League 3rd qualifying round (Champions Route) while the league runner ups will begin in the UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round (League route). The third and fourth placed SuperLeague teams will begin their journey in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round while the 2018 Greek Cup champion was initially set to start their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round.
However, since both Greek Cup finalists, AEK and PAOK, will be guaranteed a place in Europe next season do to their league placements (AEK are first, PAOK are second), the Greek Cup champion’s European spot will be granted to the SuperLeague 5th placed team.
As a result, the Champions League places will remain as mentioned above and the Greek Superleague’s 3rd placed team (currently Olympiacos) will begin in the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round (initially where the Cup champions would begin). Thus, the SuperLeague’s 4th and 5th placed teams will begin in next season’s UEFA Europa League 2nd qualifying round which is currently occupied by Atromitos and Xanthi, respectively.
