Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Sergio Araujo scored beautiful goals for AEK at the Olympic Stadium, before Olympiacos midfielder Panagiotis Tachtsidis made it a nervy finish with a firm header. Nevertheless, hosts AEK held out for the victory.

Following the battle, AEK head coach Manolo Jimenez noted the impact of Lazaros on the match. “It’s hard to find a Greek player who possesses a shot like Lazaros,” stated Jimenez. “I think that this goal will give him more confidence.” The Spaniard went on to mention the difficulty of the match, citing that AEK deserved to beat Olympiacos. “It was a balanced first half, but we knew what we wanted in the second. Olympiacos made us nervous with their goal, however AEK deserved to qualify for the next round.”

Stand in Olympiacos coach Christos Kontis, replacing the ill Oscar Garcia, was disappointed with his team’s second half display. “AEK were better between the 55th and 75th minutes, and they managed to score two goals,” said Kontis. “Still, we had two chances at the end to qualify. I believe that the club has the quality to move out of any situation,” touching upon Olympiacos’ difficult patch of form.

Olympiacos scorer Panagiotis Tachtsidis expressed his sadness at the result when speaking to COSMOTE TV. “We are very disappointed. After conceding two soft goals, our psychological strength went. If we had scored in the first match, surely things would have been different today.”

Croatian forward Marko Livaja was happy with AEK’s victory, but is already looking ahead to the upcoming games against Asteras Tripolis and Dynamo Kyiv. “Nothing is finished, we’re starting to work more,” revealed Livaja. “We want to get important victories against Asteras and in the Europa League at home. We played well today, I did everything possible to win this game.”
