Coming into this match, Aris needed a victory to progress, but Giannina only required a point to ease into the next round. Predictably, the hosts immediately took the initiative in front of their passionate home supporters. Giannina managed to restrict Aris to a limited number of opportunities, but Luka Milunovic missed a guilt edged chance when heading off target at point blank range.
The game turned on its head late in the first half. Aris defender Hugo Souza and Giannina’s Nikolaos Karanikas took a dislike to each other, a skirmish which resulted in the latter receiving a red card. The home team managed to make their numerical advantage count on 60 minutes. A swerving free-kick found the lurking Milunovic, who atoned for his earlier miss with a firm header beyond the stranded Giannina goalkeeper. Aris were in the driving seat, but Giannina stunned the Thessaloniki side twelve minutes later. Substitute Karim Soltani latched onto a brilliant through ball, before calmly slotting into the net.
Aris even threw their goalkeeper into the penalty box during the dying seconds, but Giannina held on to a precious point which sees them progress from Group G along with Panionios.
