After winning this year’s German Basketball Bundesliga, Bamberg rounded out the 16-team puzzle for next year’s Euroleague. The formatting changes to the Euroleague, which were enforced for the first time this season, were considered a huge success and the competition plans to continue this format in the years to come. A reminder that Olympiacos made it to this year's final but fell to Fenerbahce 80-64.
This format includes a 16-team regular season where each team players the other home and away with the top eight clubs advancing to the playoffs. The four winners from the playoffs advance to the Final-4 were the European champion is crowned.
In addition to the 11 teams that have a 10-year contract with the Euroleague, including Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Fenerbahce, Armani Milano, Anadolu Efes, CSKA Moscow, Zalgiris, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia, and Maccabi Tel-Aviv, five teams are given a one year license to compete in the Euroleague based on domestic performance (and the EuroCup champion).
The five additional places are given to one team from the VTB league, Spanish ACB League, the Adriatic League, the German Basketball Bundesliga, and the EuroCup Champion. If the champions of these respective leagues already have a license with the Euroleague, which is usually the case, the next highest ranked team from that competition will take that respective team’s place in the Euroleague.
Below is a list of the teams that will partake in next year’s Euroleague which will once again have two Greek representatives (for the next nine years), Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.
