Greece did not manage to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia much to the chagrin of Greeks around the world. Fans have different views as to why that didn’t happen. Too careless against Croatia in that first leg playoff. Missed opportunities against Belgium in both matches. A lack of initiative against Estonia. Skibbe’s tactics. His team selection. Blame on the players themselves. Too defensive. Not good enough defensively. No real offensive plan.
It might be a little of everything, but the fact remains that for the first time since 2006, Greece will not be represented at the World Cup. Four years ago, the Ethniki made history by advancing to the knockout stage of the competition for the first time ever, missing out on a place in the last eight due to a penalty shoot-out loss to Costa Rica. Writing that out is still a painful feeling.
Despite the fact that we cannot cheer the Ethniki on in Russia, AGONAsport will still be covering the world’s biggest sporting event.
Our team will be giving you a daily recap of tournament action with special focus on the Greek connections in the competition, those players and coaches that currently or in the past have worked in Greece. With some 20 different individuals representing their countries in Russia who have played or coached in Greece, there will be plenty of links and memorable names for the entire diaspora to keep an eye on in Russia.
We will cover the talking points every day and help bring you answers to the questions like can Messi lead Argentina to the title? Will Germany repeat? Is the ‘Hexa’ within Brazil’s grasp? Which darkhorse will live up to its billing? And will VAR be a mess or the right system on the sport’s grandest stage?
Will one of “our” players shine? Can Prijovic or Ansarifard bang them like they did this season at club level? Will names from the past like Berg, Campbell, and Milivojevic shine while the world is watching? Could Santos somehow lead Portugal to an unthinkable EURO and World Cup double?
Greece won’t be there, but AGONAsport still will be and so won’t some recognizable names and faces that we have seen up close along the way. Whether you are rooting for England, Australia, Germany or have been forced to adopt a country, enjoy the beauty of the world’s biggest sporting event. Maybe, just maybe in four years’ time we will be fortunate enough to see Greece back amongst the mix in Qatar.
