Thrilling Super League climax in store

Thrilling Super League climax in store

The most exciting Greek title race in recent years is entering its decisive phase. PAOK lead the way with an impressive 52 points after 22 rounds, but AEK and Olympiacos aren’t willing to wave the white flag.

Watch AEK fight in the Ukraine against Dynamo Kyiv for a place in the Last 16 of the UEFA Europa League LIVE from AGONAsport.com on Thursday, February 22nd.

Leaders PAOK, searching for their maiden league title since 1985, are in simply unstoppable form, winning ten consecutive matches in the Super League to open up a two-point gap over second placed AEK Athens. However, AEK are putting huge pressure on PAOK, going unbeaten for 23 successive matches in all competitions. On March 11, the two top teams meet at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki, a battle which will surely be crucial.

Reigning champions Olympiacos began 2018 in first position, but with new head coach Oscar Garcia, the Thrylos have endured a barren stretch of results. Just to make matters worse, Olympiacos were hit with a three-point deduction following the unsavoury incident against AEK at home, meaning that they find themselves nine points behind PAOK. If Olympiacos are somehow going to claim an eighth Greek championship in a row, they have to beat PAOK in Thessaloniki on the coming Sunday.

Atromitos Athens, occupying fourth place in the Super League, cannot be ruled out either. While a tilt at the crown looks unlikely, they are only the one point away from Olympiacos. With influential Egyptian midfielder Amr Warda pulling the strings, Atromitos have punched above their weight, enjoying a memorable debut campaign with Austrian head coach Damir Canadi at the helm. Next Monday, the club host AEK in Peristeri, and they also have an upcoming home match with PAOK.
