USA planning tournament for those that failed to qualify for Russia 2018

Dellas the favorite to take over if Skibbe departs

Following the failure of several top nations to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Americans have come up with a cunning plan. The USA, who also didn’t make the World Cup, are planning to host a tournament for countries which missed out on Russia. Greece are among the teams which could participate.

Countries such as Greece, USA, Chile, Italy, Holland, Ecuador, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Wales all missed out on the 2018 World Cup, something which has sparked talk of a replacement tournament. However, there is doubt surrounding the possibility of holding a parallel World Cup. Would FIFA allow the competition to take place? Will players be prepared to sacrifice their summer holidays to play in an unofficial tournament in the USA? Getting a positive answer to both questions won’t be an easy task.

The Americans seem pretty serious about the idea, but it’s not all down to football. The FOX television network invested 200 million dollars in the broadcasts of World Cup matches, however the USA contrived to not qualify for the tournament. As a result, FOX needs to somehow redeem their money. Stadiums of clubs competing in the MLS would be used for the supposed parallel World Cup.

It seems that the competition would take place during the same period as the World Cup, but given the large time difference between Russia and the USA, it wouldn’t be a huge problem. If the idea comes to fruition, it would certainly be a decent opportunity for the Ethniki’s players to test themselves against some of the world’s best, albeit not at the real thing.
