With Panathinaikos putting on one of their best performances of the season, the Prasini came away with a major win on the road by defeating Baskonia 63-72. The win brings Panathinaikos within one win of fourth placed Fenerbahce, who lost away to Efes.
In a do or die matchup on the road against Baskonia, Panathinaikos put on a dominating performance to come away with a valuable win. The Prasini took control of the game early on, quickly pulling ahead by double digits, and their lead increased to as many as 22-points (25-47) in the third quarter.
However, after a one sided game in the opening 30 minutes, Baskonia came to life in the final quarter and cut Panathinaikos’ lead to six points taking advantage of multiple turnovers from the Prasini. With Baskonia back in the game, James came through with two big shots to re-give Panathinaikos a comfortable lead and in the end, the visitors celebrated a critical victory in their fight for fourth place.
Singleton was Panathinaikos’ leading scorer with 18 points and 8 rebounds as James came up big in the fourth quarter, finishing with 11 points. Calathes played his role as playmaker as he scored 8 points and dished 8 assists. Hanga, Budinger, and Voigtmann kept the hosts in the game.
The win increases Panathinaikos’ record to 17-11 and they are now tied with fourth placed Fenerbahce, who lost earlier today to Anadolu Efes. The Turkish club does, however, hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Prasini and with two games remaining in the regular season, Panathinaikos will need to win one more game than Fenerbahce to steal fourth place and home court advantage for the playoffs.
The result does assure Panathinaikos at minimum the 5th seed spot in the playoffs, holding a two game lead over both Baskonia and Efes.
