Dirk Schlemmer, who is head of football services at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and boasts plenty of VAR experience in the German Bundesliga, recently chaired a conference dedicated to the implementation of the system in the Super League. According to Schlemmer, VAR has a 98.8% success rate in making the correct decisions such as penalties and offsides, meaning it will help Greek referees in avoiding glaring mistakes in important matches.
At the meeting, these following declarations were made to the IFAB and FIFA on behalf of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO):
The EPO will vote to amend the refereeing rules for VAR use in June 2018;
In September 2018, a contract of cooperation will be signed with the technical advisor;
VAR will be ready for operation in the Super League’s exclusive fibernet network in September 2018.
Alongside these issues, the referees’ VAR training program needs to be kicked into action over the summer and contact with broadcasting companies must be made to adjust the television signal.
The EPO have the goal of installing the VAR system in the Super League in September, although different stories published in the Greek media suggest that video technology might not be seen until late autumn, when the first half of the season is nearing its completion. Nevertheless, there is optimism among the EPO that VAR will be introduced to the top flight of Greek football sooner rather than later.
