Veria Bid Adieu to SuperLeague, Iraklis Pull Out of Relegation Zone
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 28
|PAS Giannina||1 - 2||Iraklis|
|Panetolikos||1 - 0||Veria|
Veria were mathematically relegated to the Football League after a 1-0 defeat away to Panetolikos. Iraklis pulled out of the relegation zone with a big 1-2 win away to PAS Giannina.
Veria’s relegation from the top flight was confirmed on Sunday evening after a 1-0 defeat to Panaitolikos in Agrinio left them without a chance of climbing out of trouble.
The SuperLeague’s bottom club fell behind to Farley Vieira Rosa’s 16th-minute strike for the home side, and they never looked like getting back on level terms in a disappointing display typical of their season.
Veria would even have lost by a greater margin had Panaitolikos’ Argentine midfielder Fabian Munoz found the back of the net instead of the woodwork with five minutes left.
The battle to stay up continues among several teams above Veria, however, and Iraklis continued their remarkable reverse in fortunes with a third successive SuperLeague victory, beating PAS Giannina 2-1 away from home at Zosimades.
Iraklis went in front after 11 minutes in spectacular fashion when Michalis Bastakos let fly with a superb long range volley which flew into the top corner.
Winger Christos Donis, on loan from Panathinaikos, then scored for the third game in a row two minutes after half-time to put Iraklis in a commanding position which they never relinquished, despite Igor Vidal pulling a goal back for the hosts with seven minutes left.
The result saw Iraklis climb out of the relegation zone into 13th spot, two points clear of Levadiakos who occupy the last relegation place.
