As previously reported on AGONAsport, Veria had been toying with the idea of withdrawing from Greece’s second tier, stating that the lack of finances wouldn’t allow the team to continue participating in the Football League. Despite attempts to save Veria’s fate, it was eventually decided that the club would leave the championship midway through the season.
The Football League released an official statement concerning Veria’s departure, revealing that Veria have officially left the division due to three penalties being imposed for not paying player wages. Veria were occupying 17th place in the table with 11 points after six had been deducted for not paying wages to ex-players.
Moving forward into the future, Veria’s current players are trying to come to an agreement with the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) in order to find a way to join new clubs for the remainder of the 2017/2018 season. Veria will probably now set out plans ahead of competing in the Gamma Ethniki.
