Vlachodimos Short-Term Future Still Undecided
Odisseas Vlachodimos has agreed to terms to continue his promising career at Portuguese giants Benfica, however, his short-term future is still very much up in the air according to latest reports.
The German youth international, who is still eligible to represent Greece at senior level, has signed with Benfica until 2023, but the excellent performance of young goalkeeper Mile Svilar at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League could secure him a spot in further matchday squads. Rui Vitoria is thought to be a fan of Svilar and has recently indicated he may be satisfied with the three goalkeepers currently at his disposal to see out the current season.
This would mean Vlachodimos will become a Benfica player in January, but would still continue with Panathinaikos until the conclusion of the current season. If this was the case, it would undoubtedly be a massive boost for the Greens and their bid to move up the Greek Super League ladder following an inconsistent start. However the decision is in Benfica’s hands.
Additionally, another thing worth noting is the large release clause inserted in the contract of Vlachodimos. Benfica are renowned for buying young players with high potential in order to sell for huge profits, and it is no different here. The clause is a whopping 60 million Euro! This is sure to put off potential suitors early on, however, if he performs well the sky is the limit. It will definitely make for interesting viewing to see how it all pans out.
