Vouliagmeni Halt Olympiacos’ Dominance to Win Greek CUp
Vouliagmeni handed Olympiacos their first domestic defeat in over four years to celebrate this year’s Greek Cup title, defeating the Erythrolefki 8-7 in today’s Final.
It was a closely contest match between Vouliagmeni and Olympiacos for the 2017 Greek Water Polo Cup Final in Karpenisi. Olympiacos held a slight advantage for most of the first half and took a 4-3 lead into halftime.
Vouliagmeni outscored Olympiacos 2-3 in the third period as the two teams went into the final eight minutes tied at 6-6.
Genidounias re-gave Olympiacos the 7-6 lead before goals from Vitsos and Solanakis gave Vouliagmeni the lead for the first time in the game with just over three minutes remaining. Vouliagmeni’s goalkeeper and best player on the day, Zerdevas did his job to keep Olympiacos from scoring a late equalizer as his team celebrated their first Greek Cup title since 2012.
Today’s loss is Olympiacos’ first in over four years of domestic play having won the last 5 Greek League Titles and last four Greek Cup Championships. The last time the Erythrolefki tasted defeat in Greece was back on May 8, 2013.
Vouliagmeni will be pleased with the ending to their season while Olympiacos now prepare for next weekend’s LEN Champions League Final-6.
