Vranjes first centre-back to score hat-trick in Super League
AEK defender Ognjen Vranjes scored three historic goals at the weekend, becoming the first centre-back to grab a hat-trick in Greece’s top footballing tier.
The 28-year old Bosnian, who was reportedly close to joining Belgian club Anderlecht in the transfer window, scored three practically identical goals in the first half of AEK Athens’ thumping 4:0 Super League victory against Xanthi. Vranjes was the first AEK player to register a hat-trick in the top division since Nikos Liberopoulos’ treble against Egaleo (5:2) on April 15, 2007.
Before Vranjes’ three-goal effort against Xanthi on Sunday, AEK’s last foreigner to notch a hat-trick was Serbian attacking midfielder Dragan Ciric in the club’s 3:2 victory against Iraklis on October 17, 1999. Vranjes is indeed the first ever centre-back in the Greek championship to score three goals in one match, an achievement which probably won’t be repeated for some time.
