Wasteful Greens defeat Gabala to earn slender advantage
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 3RD QUALIFYING ROUND (LEG 1)
|Panathinaikos||1 - 0||Gabala|
|Mollins (p) 37'|
Panathinaikos will take a slender one-goal advantage to Azerbaijan next week for the second leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie against Gabala after missing a hatful of chances in a 1-0 victory over their opponents in the first leg at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium on Thursday.
Guillermo Molins scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after 37 minutes, sending Gabala goalkeeper Dmytro Bezotosny the wrong way after Ilgar Burganov handled the ball in the penalty area.
But Marinos Ouzounidis will be kicking himself tonight after the Greens missed several chances in a one-sided contest in front of a noisy and partisan Panathinaikos faithful who saw their team impress from the first whistle.
Finnish midfielder Robin Lod in particularly had one of his better games, and in another day might have scored a double after hitting the woodwork once in each half.
There were further misses from Molins and Omri Altman on a night when the score could have finished 4-0 or 5-0 in Panathinaikos favour with the tie being dead and burried.
Instead Panathinaikos will now have to tread carefully when they visit Gabala next Thursday, August 3 as they look to book a place in the playoff draw which takes place the day after on Friday at Uefa’s Nyon HQ.
