Watertight Atromitos mentioned in the same breath as Barcelona
Atromitos Athens’ defence has been watertight so far in the Super League, conceding three goals in nine games. Just to make their achievement even more impressive, they find themselves mentioned in the same breath as Spanish giants Barcelona!
You won’t often be able to put Atromitos and Barcelona in the same category, but the Super League leaders’ defence has matched the Catalonians’ back line.
Aided by the rock solid Andreas Gianniotis between the sticks, a goalkeeper who is yet to concede a goal this campaign, Atromitos have let in a mere three goals in nine Super League games. Only two teams in Europe can boast such a record: Red Star Belgrade and the mighty Barcelona. Yes, maybe it’s too early to compare Atromitos and Barcelona, but it does display just how much the capital outfit have been punching above their weight.
However, Barcelona have played ten games compared to Atromitos’ nine, while Red Star Belgrade’s three goals have been conceded in fifteen games. Despite the Serbian league not being the strongest, it’s a statistic which catches the eye.
Here is a list of how many goals the leaders of Europe’s biggest leagues have conceded (amount of matches is in brackets):
Spain - Barcelona 3 (10)
England - Manchester City 6 (10)
Italy - Napoli 8 (11)
Germany - Bayern Munich 7 (10)
France - PSG 8 (11)
Portugal - Porto 4 (10)
Holland - PSV Eindhoven 10 (10)
Russia - Lokomotiv Moscow 11 (15)
