It was a historic day for the Greek national women’s basketball team as they stunned the Russians 62-58 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Eurobasket tournament for the first time in the team’s history. Kostas Keramidas’ side, who finished third in the group stages, were the complete outsiders in today’s match against a very strong Russia side, but managed to record their first win in team history over their Russian opponents.
A dominating display in the third quarter from the Greeks was a key turning point in the match, where they outscored their opponents 22-4 to take a 50-36 lead. The more experienced Russia side came back with a great run in the fourth quarter to take the lead at 56-58, but Kaltsidou and Maltsi came through for Greece to secure the big win.
Kaltsidou was the MVP of the game finishing with 24 points and 9 rebounds.
Greece will now face a strong Turkish side on Thursday in the quarterfinals with hopes of continuing their dream run in the competition. Once again, Greece will be the outsiders while the winners of Group B, Turkey, are expected to advance to the semifinals.
