Xanthi return to winning form with away success in Lamia
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 16
|Lamia||0 - 1||Xanthi|
Xanthi earned a crucial away win over Lamia on Sunday to end a four-match barren run without a win, while PAS Giannina and Asteras Tripolis shared the spoils of a goalless draw.
Honduras international midfielder Alfredo Mejía scored the only goal of the game at the Lamia Municipal Stadium after 34 minutes to seal all three points for Milan Rastavac’s Xanthi, who were in desperate need of a three-point haul to keep up with the pace in the top half of the table.
The win propelled Xanthi up to seventh place and to within just two points of sixth-placed Asteras Tripolis, who stalled to a goalless draw in their first match of the year also on Sunday at PAS Giannina.
|PAS Giannina||0 - 0||Asteras Tripolis|
For PAS, it was the first game in the post-Kostas Mavropanos era at the Zosimades Stadium after the talented young defender sealed a move to English Premier League giants Arsenal.
Chances were few and far between with defences on top, and the result helps neither side in their bid to break into the upper reaches of the table where they might challenge for a European place.
It was the visitors who came closest to scoring at the death when Ukrainian defender Yevhen Selin was denied by the woodwork in the first minute of added time.
