Manolo Jimenez selected a young side for this fixture, handing promising goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas his first start since an injury sustained during the summer. Nevertheless, despite playing a weakened team, AEK’s class immediately became apparent against their Football League opponents. Adam Tzanetopoulos headed Viktor Klonaridis’ pinpoint cross into the right corner, before eighteen year old Christos Giousis slotted an accurate drive beyond the Kallithea netminder on the half-hour mark.
However, two minutes later, Gerasimos Papangelis knocked a loose ball into the AEK net after the original shot had smacked the woodwork. Buoyed by that goal, Kallithea then won a penalty when Tzanetopoulos clumsily brought down Macedo Junior. The latter dusted himself down to beat Barkas with a low effort.
Hungry for a third consecutive win in the group stage, AEK threw on first teamers Rodrigo Galo and Tasos Bakasetas in the second half. The visitors laid siege to the Kallithea goal, registering eighteen shots and hitting the crossbar at point blank range through Giorgios Giakoumakis. Kallithea were holding on, but thirteen minutes from time, AEK finally broke through. A rebound fell to the talented Giousis, who scored his second goal with a superb shot from inside the area. A professional debut to remember for the young AEK prospect.
Thanks to this victory, AEK emerge from Group C with a maximum nine points, progressing to the playoffs with Lamia. Kallithea bring up the rear behind Apollon Larissa.
