Zenit give Manolas deadline, Rumors of Chelsea’s involvement
Zenit have given Kostas Manolas a deadline of this Saturday to respond to their offer before they move on to someone else while there are rumors that Chelsea’s interest in the player could be playing a role behind the scenes.
On Wednesday, Kostas Manolas was scheduled to undergo the necessary medical tests and sign with Zenit after both Manolas and Roma had come to an agreement with the Russian side for Manolas’ move to Saint Petersburg. However, a disagreement on Wednesday morning between Manolas and Zenit resulted in the Greek defender’s no show to the medical tests. The issue had to do with what currency Manolas would be paid in by his new club with Manolas insisting on payment in Euros while Zenit were offering his payment in the local Russian ruble.
Manolas’ stance on the matter has frustrated the people at Zenit and coach Roberto Mancini. According to recent reports, Manolas met with Zenit again on Wednesday with no signs of an agreement and the Russians have given the 25-year old an ‘ultimatum’ until Saturday to respond to their deal before they move on to another stopper.
However, reports out of Italy state that the currency issue could be a small detour to the fact that Chelsea (or another English club) have swooped in last minute to sign the Greece international. Mixed reports state that the Premier League club placed a better offer to both Roma (€40 million compared to Zenit’s €35 million) and Manolas in a last ditch effort to bring Manolas to London. These developments have been reported by multiple Italian media outlets, but have also been falsified by the likes of Sky Italia.
Despite the fact that Manolas’ move to Saint Petersburg looked to be a done deal, everything remains open in regards to the next stop in his career, if he eventually leaves Roma. One thing is certain, that this saga will continue to be a big topic around the European football world.
