In the post game scuffle between Bosnia and Greece, Stefan Zili punched Giannis Gianniotas in the face resulting in two lost teeth for the Greece international. Earlier today he spoke with ERA Spor and explained the situation saying “I am in the field of football for over 30 years as a player and coach and I love the sport and I respect everyone and everything. At the end of the game, I saw lots of tension between the players and I attempted to separate them. I have viewed the video all morning and I cannot understand my reaction towards the Greek international, who was aggressive towards everyone. Although Gianniotas was in an aggravated state, I have no excuses. Initially I pulled him away so he would calm down, but he continued to be aggressive and what happened, happened.”
He went on to talk about how he felt about the situation and the possible consequences that await him for his actions. “I wish I could see him today to ask for forgiveness. I will look to work with the federation to solve the problem that has developed. I am truly sorry for what happened and I wish a speedy recover to your player. Responsibilities always burden two sides. One side has more responsibility than the other while the other side has less responsibility. Don’t forget, we did lose two players do to hard tackles. I feel awful and yesterday I could not sleep. I still can't believe what happened.”
Zili could lose his position with the national team and that will be decided by the Bosnian Football Federation. However based on the head coach’s remarks earlier today, Mehmed Bazdarevic did not see any fault in Zili’s actions.
