-- EXPLANATION OF football league STANDINGS --

Standings & Calculation

The Greek Football League standings are calculated based off a points system used across the soccer world. Three points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the Football League (34 fixtures) is considered the Football League Champion. The 2nd place team, along with the champion, are promoted to the Greek SuperLeague for the following season. The 4 last placed teams are relegated to the Gamma Ethniki (3rd Division) whereas the 4 group winners from the Gamma Ethniki are promoted to the Football League.

Tie Breakers

If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head results)
  2. Superior goal difference from the league matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head goal difference)
  3. Higher number of goals scored (goals forced) from ALL league matches played
  4. Less number of goals against (goals conceded) from ALL league matches played
  5. Playoff (neutral ground); only used to decide a champion, promotion, or relegation
